We are looking for highly motivated individual to work on an exciting collaboration between the University of Bath, the Foundry, a world-leading provider of tools to the Visual Effects (VFX) and Post-Production industry and DNEG the internationally acclaimed Post-Production house with numerous accolades including Academy Awards for First Man, Blade Runner 2049, Ex Machina, Interstellar and Inception.

You will lead a new project that will use machine learning approaches to create intelligent tools to help artists; this new generation of software will allow them to be more creative and productive. The outputs of the project will be incorporated into future applications and will be used in the production of new films and games.

The position will include regular visits to work alongside the research team at DNEG and Foundry and would be an excellent preparation for a research career in VFX.

The core themes of the group’s research are applying Machine Learning techniques to solve problems in Computer Vision and Computer Graphics. This position is to work on a new Innovate UK project (SmartRoto) that builds upon our recent work to create intelligent tools to help artists in Post-Production. To this end, the position involves collaboration with The Foundry and the research team at DNeg. The project will start by looking at video segmentation and camera/object tracking and build from there into a number of other applications.

The position will be associated with the CAMERA centre that has a world-class production standard motion-capture studio, including a range of full body and facial Vicon optical capture systems and multi-camera 4K arrays. In this post, we are looking for a highly skilled and motivated computer vision/graphics researcher to, not only, work on the specific intelligent tools project, but also function as part of this wider effort to look at new technologies for motion capture and its application to the creative industries, sport science and health.

You will join the vibrant Visual Computing and Machine Learning group at Bath which comprises around 30 doctoral students, 10 post-doctoral researchers and 8 academics and presents many opportunities for collaborative work and shared publications.

In addition to the standard duties of performing research and the dissemination of research through publications and demonstrations (e.g. SIGGRAPH, FMX and CVPR), you will also be expected to be involved in the supervision of PhD students and have some teaching duties at undergraduate or graduate level.
